Treatment philosophy
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts, and as a health-care discipline is based on the premise that good health care depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. When body structures such as cells and organs are functioning normally, a state of health or normal physiology exists. However, when the body's physiology is abnormal, the potential for a disease state exists.
The spinal cord has 31 pairs of spinal nerves which exit from the spinal column. If there is a compromise of any of these nerve roots, you can develop a "pinched nerve" which can lead to muscle spasm and or pain. Chiropractic doctors gently adjust the spine to restore normal movement of the vertebrae.
In our office we use motion palpation to detect vertebral subluxation (fixation) to determine what level of the ventral column to adjust. Range of motion is also checked on every visit.
Dr. Dick uses a variety of techniques, depending on the patient. The most common is diversified technique, which uses the hands to gently maniuplate the spine and other joints of the body. Motion palpation is used to detect fixated vertabrae, and deep muscle massage helps patients relax prior to an adjustment. Trigger point therapy helps relax the muscles. We also use traction, heat packs, and cold packs when necessary.
There are several other gentle techniques used on older patients and children.
